Over the Hill

I suppose it’s how you keep people in the game, keep them guessing, keep them searching for what’s over the hill, what’s in the field next door. That’s how you keep people.

It’s human nature to want to know more and it’s exciting when you look over at the next thing. But it has to be controlled. You can’t just walk over the hill and see, you have to take a path or a road, then at least we can make sure we were there first. And we know what reaction to expect.

But I tell you as I lost my self in the mids of the brush I found beautiful things that made my heart light. Spaces and insects that made me excited just standing there. Doing nothing, just being still and letting my eye wander over nature, raw, untouched and beautiful. I became that butterfly.

Sticky

I woke up early, but wanted to sleep more. My body was tired from the walk. I felt like I wanted to go again, to hike up the hill and try hard, but another part of me thought it would be better to rest.

Then the mind started to tick remembering last night and that smile. It was okay, the beers and the laughter, although slowing me down was worth it, just to see her bounce around.

I rolled over to the cold side of the pillow, a little laughter emerged from my heart. I was stuck again, what would come out of this new turn?

The regime was strict, roles and responsibilities were clearly defined and the swarm delivered. There were no complaints and no disobedience, but in time the workers were drawn to the cascade.

‘Have you ever flown between the sticks?’

‘You mean pass the wall between the bombs?’

‘Yea’

‘No that’s crazy, if you get hit with one of them it’s over. You’ll end up spinning in circles in the water below.’

‘Terry did it last week.’

There was a hush around the group as the story sunk in. ‘No way, that’s not true Terry wouldn’t even take on the keeper, he once told me he is scared of the walkers. The honey thieves. There is no chance he would take on the bombs.’

‘He did and he said it was the most incredible feeling ever. Clean wings no gold dust, and when he said clean, it wasn’t just like wiping your antennas, he said he could fly twice as fast, like those dragon flys.’

‘Shut up, are you telling me he flew into some of the bombs? Like they actually hit him?’

‘Yea, he took four or five hits’

‘And he didn’t crash, he was able to handle the weight?’

‘Yea he said it was hard, the force of the water was big, but he said he just held on.’

‘Was he in the air?’

‘Not sure, he was definitely on the stick for a few, but one might have hit him in the air.’

‘Brrrrr..’ Jay rolled his lips shaking his head in disbelief, ‘I don’t believe it, crazy… and he said he could fly twice as fast?’

‘That’s what he said.’

‘Wow’ Jay looked over at the cascade, dreaming of speed.

A Trap

We were promised everything. It had never happened to me before but we walked into the room, ready for a fight and… There was no resistance, no maybe, no we will think about it, no no’s! Just yes… It was unerring.

Before we went into the meeting we had discussed what we were willing to give up and what we wanted to fight for, but when all of those things were granted, I have to admit, we were a bit weak asking for more, timid. But they granted us more anyway. We were basically promised the world, so we gave in, we just accepted that all things were going to be great and signed.

And it was not like they didn’t deliver, for the first three months we couldn’t believe it, we were given everything that they promised, all the tools we needed and all the extra resources we asked for, we were swimming in luxury.

But then it changed, however it was not them who changed things, it was us, we had been drowning in the good stuff and it was suffocating. We just didn’t have any fight, any edge, we lost our spark, our willingness to think creatively, we just expected things to be there in place and for people to get it.

We had it so we expected everyone else too as well. But that’s not how it works. Some people out there are still fighting, searching, they have the edge. We were just stuck in the honey pot with all the others who have it, or at least think they have it.

Dragon Lillies

‘You go’

‘No way… you first’

‘Nope you threw it, you can go and fetch it’

‘But what if she is there…’

‘Then you better get in and out quickly’

Emily walked up to the walled garden, took one look back at her sister, let out a long sigh and scaled the wall. Davina looked on, the corners of her mouth unsure whether to bloom into a smile or wither to concern.
‘Can you see it?’ Davina called out as Emily dropped down into the garden. But she received no reply, Emily was either ignoring her or out of earshot. ‘Is the witch there?’ She called a little louder. But again there was no response, her options of ignoring and unheard changed to under a spell or dead. ‘Are you okay?’ She started to shout, but failed to finish as her subconscious mind prevented the words from leaving her mouth, afraid of drawing attention to her sister on the wrong side of the wall.
